History of the department

As it is evident from the documents, training of specialists in phthisiology started in 1949, when the first set of advanced training courses for tuberculotherapists was created and started the same year. The courses were held at the 1st Therapy Department of the Belarusian State Institute of Advanced Medical Training. The department was headed by (from 1949 to 1970) professor Adensky-Pinchuk Andrey Dmitrievich (1897-1979).

From the 1st January, 1947, Samuil Aleksandrovich Agranovich, Candidate of Medical Sciences, an Associate Professor, had been head of the Course of Tuberculosis. S.A. Agranovich worked as an Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Diseases. Afterwards, S.A. Agranovich worked as a vice head of the Department of Tuberculosis of Belarusian State Institute of Advanced Medical Training.

This day is considered to be the day of the department’s foundation. By this time Z.K.Zagorskaya and assistant M.I.Bobrovskaya had been working at the department. In 1963 Mikhail Nikolaevich Lomako, director of the Scientific and Research Institute of Tuberculosis, was appointed temporarily to the post of head of the Department of Tuberculosis (part-time basis). From 1964 to 1983 the department was headed by professor Evgeny Borisovich Meve (1910 - 1990), Honored Scientist of BSSR, an active member of the Great Patriotic War, awarded for service in battle with 3 orders and 16 medals. In 1980 the department got a new name – the Department of Pulmonology. From 1983 to 2010 the department was headed by professor Valentin Sergeevich Korovkin.

Since 2010 the department has been headed by Elena Anatolievna Lapteva.

Main scientific-research and academic fields

Development of diagnostics, differentiated diagnostics, treatment and prevention of chronic obstructive lung disease, study of peculiarities of clinical phenotype COPD formation;

Study of drug-resistant tuberculosis in children and teenagers;

Study of clinical and epidemiological peculiarities of respiratory organ tuberculosis and extrapulmonary forms of disease in children and teenagers, improvement of diagnostics and treatment;

determination of species composition of lung mycobacteriosis causative agents, study of role of innovative medical technologies in the development of lung pathology in the Republic of Belarus, improvement of mycobacteriosis diagnostics.

Scientific and research activities

Study of peculiarities of pathogenesis, local immunity and COPD course under current conditions and approbation of methods of therapy influence and secondary prevention methods on sufficient clinical material help to determine causation of viral and bacterial infection at a definite stage of disease development, which considerably influences on approaches of treatment and rehabilitation of COPD. Researches carried out on different clinical bases have proved the efficiency of corticosteroid application (inhalational and parenteral forms) while treating patients with COPD at definite stages of disease development, particularly chronic obstructive bronchitis.   Study outcomes are applied at Regional Antituberculous Dispensary, Republican Hospital of  Speleotherapy.

At present the department together with specialists from State Establishment «Republican Hospital of Speleotherapy» in Soligorsk is developing new schemes of speleotherapy of obstructive lung diseases (E.A.Lapteva).

Results of works “Etiology of modern pneumonias and drug resistance of originators” are being prepared for publication. Results of the research have been implemented into the work of Regional Antituberculous Dispensary. Analysis of work results in detection and treatment of tuberculosis at penal institutions will help to work out and implement optimal schemes of therapeutic intervention into malignant forms of tuberculosis with polyresistance to ordinary antituberculous drugs. Preliminary figures, received after completion of this work help to recommend photofluorographic examination, which should be done at least 2 times a year as an obligatory method of timely diagnostics of tuberculosis, which leads to further morbidity reduction  at penal institutions and, accordingly, among  civil population. «Improvement of diagnostics and tuberculosis treatment, and chronic nonspecific respiratory organ diseases».

Staff of the department carries out study of peculiarities of clinical course of respiratory organ and lymph gland tuberculosis in children in modern radioecological conditions affected by changed sensibility of tuberculosis microbacterium to antituberculous drugs. Results of the research have been published.

The conducted work on analysis of mortality from tuberculosis at antituberculous establishments helps to make a conclusion about increase in number of progressing forms and desensitization of tuberculosis microbacterium to main antituberculous drugs, which indicates for the necessity of regular X-ray examination, especially among threatening population segments, and also usage of 4 and more antituberculous drugs while treating general forms of tuberculosis (L.K.Surkov, I.V. Kovalenko).

Main objective of scientific work of the department: improvement of diagnostics and treatment of tuberculosis and chronic nonspecific respiratory organ diseases.
