History of the department

The Department of Oncology and Medical Radiology of Belarusian State Institute of Advanced Medical Training was founded in 1960 on the basis on Scientific and Research Institute of Oncology and Medical Radiology. The founder of the department was professor N.N.Aleksandrov, a prominent scientist and health professional, a talented teacher and physician, hero of socialist labor, corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of SSSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

Clinical bases of the department are the following ones: Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after N.N.Aleksandrov, Minsk City Clinical Oncology Dispensary. Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after N.N.Aleksandrov has 9 scientific subdivisions and 32 clinical divisions for 820 beds, consultation and outpatient division for 250 visitors per shift. The center has well-developed diagnostic services, modern experimental and clinical laboratories, including morphological, molecular-genetic, radionuclide, immunological, biochemical, bacteriological laboratories, divisions of endoscopy and ultrasound, division of X-ray diagnostics, including computer tomography rooms, magnetic resonance imaging rooms, angiography rooms. All subdivisions of the Institute are used for lectures by staff of the department.

Main aim of the department is preparation of specialists to work at cancer care facilities and non-cancer care facilities of the Republic and mastering of specialized medical care for oncologic patients.

Fields of scientific researches

  • development and implementation of new methods of reconstruction of extensive defects of abdominal wall and pelvic floor with the application of multicomponent biological transplant with mesenchymal stem cells of human adipose tissues.
  • development of new technologies of diagnostics of oncological diseases and mastering of application of designed and manufactured automatic biopsy guns and adapters for on-the-spot fine needle trephine biopsy in a clinical practice;
  • development and implementation of transplantation technologies of autologous mesenchymal stem cells in the conditions of neutral transdifferentiation for surgery treatment of patients with peripheral nerve injuries;            
  • development and implementation of treatment methods to cure patients with ovary serous adenocarcinoma of IIC-IV stage with the application of system chemotherapy, based on determination of expression of transducin-like protein (TLE-3);
  • research of ovarian carcinoma angiogenesis aiming at diagnostic and treatment improvement to cure this disease, which is a mortality cause among women as the fifth highest in the world;
  • study of regularities of presence of tumor-associated factors HE-4, LPA, SCC, cytotoxicants and their soluble receptors in patients' blood, who suffer from gynecologic cancer, depending on cancer biological activity aiming at risk evaluation of neoplastic proliferation;
  • radioactive iodine therapy in the treatment of disseminated forms of thyroid cancer in children and teenagers
  • development and implementation of immunologic reconstruction methods in children and teenagers after transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells;
  • development of x-ray therapy methods in the regime of hypofractionation of radiation dose of prostate regional cancer;
  • development of method of early medical rehabilitation of patients with malignant tumors of neck and head organs who get chemical radiation and combined treatment
  • development of X-ray therapy, based on the selection of rational variants of dose and time ratio;
  • development and implementation of non-traditional methods of X-ray therapy with application of split course with phased mode change of dose fractionation, methods of subtotal and total patients' radiation into practice in health centers of the Republic of Belarus;
  • experimental researches aiming at studying of new effective radiomodificators of X-ray therapy (ultrasound, magnetic radiation), study of applicability of photodynamic diagnostics method and therapy of oropharyngeal area tumors with the application of photolon;
  • development and implementation of molecular-genetic method of determination of chemoresistance in patients who suffer from ovary advanced cancer of III-IV stages into clinical practice;
  • development of non-traditional methods of radiation therapy, chemoradiotherapy in the treatment of patients with malignant tumors of neck and head organs on the basis of modern achievements in radiobiology and radiation oncology.

For the period of 50 years staff of the department has published more than 1500 scientific works, including more than 20 monographs, a textbook of oncology, 2 handbooks of oncology, 19 collections of research papers. 5 instructions for use have been prepared. Inventor's certificates for 15 inventions and 26 patents have been received; more than 70 rationalization proposals have been completed.

Preparation of academic staff

Within the last 5 years 1 PhD student, 11 postgraduate students, 24 residents (5 of them were foreign ones) have undergone training at the department. At present 5 PhD students (1 of them is a citizen from Yemen), 6 clinical residents (3 of them are citizens from non-CIS countries) continue their training at the department. 1 Doctoral and 7 Candidate's theses have been protected. At present under the supervision of the department's staff 4 Candidate's and 2 Doctoral theses have being fulfilled.

Specialists working at the department were awarded by honorary certificates from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Belarus, Health Council of Minsk City Executive Committee, BelMAPE. A.V.Moisey, assistant of the department, was the holder of the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Staff of the department has published about 1000 scientific works, including 18 monographs, 2 handbooks of oncology, Inventor's certificates for 25 inventions, 5 patents have been received, 50 rationalization proposals have been completed.
