History of the department

Department of Infectious Diseases of Belarusian State Institute of Advanced Training was founded in 1939. Base of the department is Minsk Infectious Hospital. At this hospital under supervision of professor N.V. Bondareva there was created the first Division of Resuscitation for infectious patients in Belarus and CIS-countries. She is the author of works devoted to the study of clinics, etiology and pathogenesis of diphteria, measles, rubella, viral hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, antibiotic therapy at infectious diseases, vaccinotherapy against poliomyelitis. From 1972 there had been organized visiting courses to Central Asia, to the Far East and throughout Belarus. Septic Center had been created. In 1992 moved to a new-built Pediatric Infectious Clinical Hospital. In 1998 there was founded Republican Scientific and Practical Center on diagnostics and treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, in 1999 there was founded Republican Pediatric Hepatological Centre.

In September, 2005, two departments were created: Department of Infectious Diseases (head of the department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor V.A. Matveev) on the base of healthcare establishment «City Infectious Clinical Hospital» and Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, which was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor A.A. Kluchareva, on the base of healthcare establishment «City Pediatric Infectious Clinical Hospital».

In 2010 two departments were united and transformed into the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Infections, which was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor A.A. Kluchareva, on the base of infectious in-patient clinics of Minsk.

The department carries out retraining courses for infectious disease specialists, pediatricians, therapists on the specialty «infectious diseases», also advanced training courses for infectionists, pediatricians and physicians of other specialties.

The department regularly organizes republican conferences with international participation on different problems of infectious pathology. 

Main directions of scientific and research work

  • diagnostics, prognosis and treatment of chronic viral hepatitis;
  • diagnostics and treatment of rotaviral infection;
  • peculiarities of diagnostics, clinics and treatment of HIV-infection;
  • diagnostics, clinics of parvoviral В19 infection in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients;
  • modern vaccinal prevention;
  • infectious complications of patients with immunodepression and transplantation;
  • peculiarities of infectious diseases in children with thymomegalia.

The department pays a special attention to the study of peculiarities of viral hepatitis D and C in children and development of their individual pathogenetic therapy, improvement of following of children with this pathology.

Main advanced training courses

Advanced training courses cover issues concerning actual problems of infectious pathology, being clearly oriented for the practical needs of healthcare. The training is undergone by infectionists (heads of divisions and residents), therapists working in outpatient clinics, physicians working at admission divisions of multifield hospitals, emergency physicians, other specialists who are involved in rendering of medical care to patients with spreading  infection processes. Topics of the courses closely connected with epidemic situation in the Republic of Belarus and changing of the demands of practical health every other year. Thus, at present, the courses cover the issues of new and very important infections: HIV, serum hepatitis, flue, herpetic viral infections, also aspects of etiotropic antiviral, antibacterial and fungicide therapy.

  4. Course “Infectious diseases in gp’s practice (for physicians of therapy specialties, infection disease doctors, emergency doctors, physicians of admission divisions, outpatient clinics, first aid facilities)”.
  5. Course “ Neuroinfections: etiology, clinics, treatment (for infection disease doctors, physicians of therapy specialties, doctors of intensive therapy divisions and resuscitation division)”
  6. Course “Differentiated diagnostics and syndrome-based therapy of infectious patients for therapists, infection disease doctors, emergency doctors, physicians of intensive therapy divisions and resuscitation divisions, admitting physicians)”.

Main forms of classes - lectures, seminars, participation in scientific, clinical, hospital clinical and anatomy conferences, role-play games, a distance training course on perinatal prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child is being prepared, interactive classes. Practical classes are held with the demonstration of patients, clinical cases are being discussed. Trainees regularly participate in rounds, study to evaluate results of modern laboratory and instrumental researches. To each class there is a guidance paper.
