Department of general practice was organized in January 1999 on the basis of the corresponding course operating since 1998 under the department of emergency care. Since 2003 the department holds training of doctors and nurses on the basics of palliative medicine.
Department of General Medical Practice was organized in January 1999 on the basis of the corresponding course operating since 1998 under the Department of Emergency Medical Care. Since 2003 the department has been holding training for doctors and nurses on the basics of palliative medicine.
Training of students is adapted to the technologies of a general practitioner and is aimed at prevention and early detection of diseases, treatment and rehabilitation of patients, emergency medical aid in critical conditions, refreshing and acquiring a wide range of practical skills. During the training the trainees pass general, midterm and final tests on computer. Students improve their knowledge and skills in general practice in the field of therapy, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, outpatient surgery, oncology, dermatovenerology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, emergency medical aid; they master the skills of ophthalmoscopy and otoscopy, learn to consult on the issue of lifestyle change, to work in a team, to organize general medical practices.
All the lecturers of the department have practical experience in primary medical sanitary care, they understand its problem issues, have passed training in pedagogics, medical psychology and general medical practice.
Training of specialists is carried out at clinical bases of the department:
Courses on palliative medical care are held on the base of Children’s Hospice (Borovlyany) and Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology.
The department is well-equipped: it has a unique bank-archive of electrocardiograms, trainers of otoscopy, ophthalmology, reanimation, «minor surgery», org- and video equipment, videofilms, books etc. Listeners learn to use computer-based information system of general practitioner, learn to work with Internet, and also consult patients with demonstration of videofilms etc.
The department participates in carrying out a State Development Program of Primary Medical and Sanitary Care in the Republic of Belarus for 2003-2007. It also participated in realization of the projects MATRA-1 (1999-2001) and MATRA-2 (2003-2005). The department is closely cooperating with the Association of General Practitioners, which was organized in 2003 at WONCA.
Specialists of the department have published more than 150 scientific works, 8 handbooks and study guides, including 'Practice guidelines on general medical/family practice' edited by А.G.Mrochek, Е.А.Voronko, Minsk.: BelMAPO, 2003. - 623 pages, 'Gastroenterology in tables for a general practitioner: symptoms, syndromes and bowel disorder' N.N. Silivonchik. - Minsk: Doctor design, 2006.- 180 pages.
Clinical residents (intramural form of training – 2 years, and intramural-extramural form of training – 3 years) get the most extensive knowledge at clinical residency on the specialty General practitioner/family doctor, where the emphasis is put on mastering of skills in medical psychology, valeology, informatics, psychosomatics, work in a team etc. The training is hold on a cost-accounting basis and on a full scholarship.
41 physicians completed clinical residency. At present there are 2 clinical residents.
Listeners can get useful information and skills at the courses of palliative medicine: on medical psychology, psychiatry, basic rights, management etc.
Specialists of the department prepared more than 50 memory aids for population and recommendations for family doctors, has organized 6 republican conferences.
